Is it goodbye Environmental Award? 27 Replies

On the 24 July I contacted a number of writers and others who I know are partial to communicating about gardening and other topics, in a spirit that's green, organic and environmentally-friendly. My…Continue

Has the GMG awards got a future?

I am sure that everyone who attended last weeks GMG awards had a jolly time but I would like to know how the judges identified who had the best blog and why it was chosen?I am well aware of all the finalists and I have no gripe with them. I correspond (occasionally) with Best Blog Winner James Alexander-Sinclair - I read his blog from time to time but I would like to know the criteria applied to determine what…See More

"Whatever the underlying reason, my best advice would be to get Inga Grimsey onside." She will certainly have more time…

Beware of double accounting, John. The sponsorship fee includes the cost of 10 lunch tickets with wine so the net revenue to the Guild is considerably less than £3200. Not sure about the new VAT charges. As far as I am aware, the Guild is not…

Philip The Guild's accounts are available to every member and are published annually. It may turn over a lot of money - but the Awards are expensive to run each year. Geoff

Geoff Members are entitled to know where their money is spent. Just a simple spreadsheet emailed to members or uploaded to the GMG site would do the trick. If John's numbers are correct it would appear that the GMG awards turn over an awful…

John I don't want to get dragged into this conversation, but I don't like where you're going with the sponsorship and money aspect. All I'll say is that the Awards & Awards Lunch were set up to be non profit making - as…

I have an update for those following this discussion. Out of interest, I asked The Garden Communication & Media Company (TGC&MC), who are organising the 2009 Garden Media Guild Awards, what the cost of sponsoring an award category is, and…

It is very worrying reading re. sponsorship ( from Simon Chapman) because obviously there has to be a balance between sponsors and they have to represent the spectrum of gardening products Garden centres are making lots of sales on the back of…

John Walker has responded to most of the points in Valerie's latest reply, except one, which seems to be central to the proposed new arrangement for the Environmental Award: 'As gardeners, I think we all know the importance of green…

I have been following the line of conversation over the past few days, and feel that it is time for me to step in. Geoff Hodge was absolutely right when he said The EA remains intact, anyone can enter it and it is now more inclusive and far…

I fear we are veering off topic, Phil but surely you can appreciate that there are many expenses associated with putting on an event of this type. And even though the cost of the meal is subsidised by sponsors, it is still too high for many members.…

I don't understand why you need sponsors - members can pay for their own luncheon and members' work can be entered and judged via a website. It doesn't need to cost anyone a lot of money.

No naughtiness please, Phil: my post was conjecture and it was riddled with conditionals. "What if" was how I wrote it so please don't misreport me. That said, of course sponsors can influence. The bigger the sponsor, the more…

"The Guild could be in discussion with a major chemical company to sell the umbrella sponsorship of the awards next year. That company might find it easier to agree to put up a lot of money if the EA were dropped." I am not a GMG member -…

That's not an easy question, Val. The answer depends on the underlying reason for the award being dropped as a standalone category. Consider a couple of possible scenarios: Good for the goose A number of sponsors are producers of chemical…
